The Basics on Vitamin B12

5/25/2017

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is one of the eight B vitamins. The B vitamins work together to support your metabolism, cognitive function, and energy production - Vitamin B12 especially.

Below are answers to the most common questions about Vitamin B12:

What are good sources of Vitamin B12?
Unlike the other B-vitamins that are found in several different food groups (such as grains, legumes, nuts), B12 is found only in animal products such as eggs, poultry, fish and beef.

Who is at greatest risk for a deficiency?
  1. Vegans and vegetarians due to the little to no consumption of animal products in the diet
  2. Smokers due to decreased absorption
  3. Heavy drinkers due to decreased absorption
  4. Older adults 50+ due to decreased absorption
  5. Digestive and malabsorption disorders (i.e. celiac disease, crohn's disease, etc) due to decreased absorption
  6. Those taking certain types of medication for heartburn due to decreased absorption

What are the proposed benefits?
  1. Boost in energy
  2. Boost in metabolism
  3. Increased mood
  4. Improved mental clarity
  5. Decreased muscle aches

Even though taking in too much vitamin B12 is rare, it is still recommended you speak to your provider before taking any new supplement.
